Aadhaar linking with PAN mandatory from 1st July, 2017

Linking of existing Aadhaar Numbers with Permanent Account Number (PAN) cards has been made mandatory for taxpayers from 1st July, 2017. Also quoting of the Aadhaar Number (or Aadhaar Enrollment ID) has been made mandatory at the time of application of new PAN Cards.

Finance Bill 2017-18 had provided for linking Aadhaar with PAN and also made Aadhaar mandatory for filing of income tax returns. As per the Ministry of Finance, this was done to check tax evasion and use of multiple PAN cards.

The Department of Revenue, Ministry of Finance, Government of India, said that “every person who has been allotted PAN as on July 1, 2017, and who in accordance with the provisions of sub-section (2) of section 139AA is required to intimate his Aadhaar number, shall intimate his Aadhaar number to the principal director general of income tax (systems) or DGIT (systems)”.

This development has come after The Supreme Court on 27.06.2017 refused to stop the Central Government from making Aadhaar compulsory for receiving social welfare benefits to the common people after the deadline of 30th September,2017. Thus The Apex court has allowed the Central Government to make Aadhaar compulsory for availing benefits under different welfare schemes of the Government after 30.09.2017.
